MCP Server

Study with Claude, ChatGPT and Cursor using your own flashcards

Connect your AI assistant to Active Recalling. It can read your chapters, save the flashcards and quizzes it writes, and quiz you on what's due, while Active Recalling keeps the spaced-repetition schedule.

Server URL

https://activerecalling.com/api/mcp

Add it as a custom connector and sign in. No API key needed.

Things you can ask

  • “Turn this lecture transcript into a new chapter in my Biology folder, then add 20 flashcards.”
  • “Quiz me on everything that's due for review today, one question at a time.”
  • “Write 10 multiple-choice questions on chapter 3 and save them as a new deck.”
  • “Make a mind map of my Photosynthesis chapter.”
  • “Which chapters haven't I studied yet, and what's my current streak?”

Set it up

You need an Active Recalling account. The first time an assistant connects, you sign in and choose Allow access.

Claude (web and desktop)

  1. Works on every Claude plan (Free allows one custom connector). Open Customize → Connectors, select “+ Add”, then “Add custom connector”.
  2. Paste the server URL, keep sign-in enabled and select Add.
  3. Sign in with your Active Recalling Google account and select Allow access.
  4. In a chat, open “+” → Connectors and turn Active Recalling on.

ChatGPT

  1. Custom MCP servers need a ChatGPT Business, Enterprise or Edu plan on the web (as of October 2026); on Business, an admin adds it. Go to chatgpt.com/plugins, select the plus button, then Add custom MCP server.
  2. Name it Active Recalling, paste the server URL and choose OAuth for authentication.
  3. Select Create as a plugin, sign in with your Active Recalling account and allow access.
  4. In a chat, type @ and pick Active Recalling.

Claude Code

  1. Add the server from your terminal.
  2. Start Claude Code, run /mcp, choose active-recalling and Authenticate, then allow access in the browser.
claude mcp add --transport http active-recalling https://activerecalling.com/api/mcp

Cursor

  1. Add this to ~/.cursor/mcp.json (or .cursor/mcp.json in a project).
  2. Open Cursor Settings → MCP, select Connect next to active-recalling and allow access.
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "active-recalling": {
      "url": "https://activerecalling.com/api/mcp"
    }
  }
}

VS Code

  1. Add this to .vscode/mcp.json, or run “MCP: Add Server” and choose HTTP.
  2. Start the server from the file or the MCP view and allow access when the browser opens.
{
  "servers": {
    "active-recalling": {
      "type": "http",
      "url": "https://activerecalling.com/api/mcp"
    }
  }
}

Scripts and other clients

  1. If a client can't sign in, create a personal access token in Active Recalling under Settings → AI assistants (MCP).
  2. Send it with every request as an Authorization header.
Authorization: Bearer ar_your_token

Safe by design

  • You sign in and approve each app

    Assistants connect with OAuth 2.1 and PKCE. You see which app is asking and where it will send you before you allow access.

  • Only your own library

    Every request is scoped to your account. Disconnect an app or revoke a token at any time in Settings → AI assistants (MCP).

  • Your assistant writes, Active Recalling stores

    The MCP server never runs AI on our side. Claude, ChatGPT or Cursor writes the cards; Active Recalling saves them and schedules reviews.

  • Nothing gets deleted

    Tools can read and add study material and record reviews. They can't delete folders, chapters or cards, or touch billing.

Troubleshooting

Sign-in fails or the connector won't connect
Use the exact URL https://activerecalling.com/api/mcp (no www). Sign in with the Google account you use for Active Recalling, then remove and re-add the connector if it still fails.
“Free plan allows up to …”
The free plan has 1 folder and 2 chapters. Add material to an existing chapter, or upgrade to Pro for unlimited folders and chapters.
“A chapter can hold up to 100 flashcards”
Each chapter holds up to 100 flashcards and 100 questions. Create a new chapter for the next part of the material.
The assistant suddenly lost access
The app may have been disconnected in Settings → AI assistants (MCP). Reconnect it from your assistant and allow access again.
“Too many requests”
Each connection can make 60 requests a minute. Wait a minute and ask again.
Your client can't open a browser to sign in
Create a personal access token in Settings → AI assistants (MCP) and send it as an Authorization: Bearer header instead.

Still stuck? Email [email protected] with the assistant you use and the error you see.

Frequently asked questions

What is an MCP server?

MCP (Model Context Protocol) is an open standard that lets AI assistants use tools from other apps. The Active Recalling MCP server gives Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor and other MCP clients tools to read your study library, save new flashcards and questions, and run review sessions.

Which AI assistants work with it?

Any MCP client that supports remote servers. As of October 2026 that includes Claude on every plan (web, desktop and Claude Code), ChatGPT on Business, Enterprise and Edu plans on the web, Cursor and VS Code.

Is the MCP server free?

Yes. Every Active Recalling account can connect. The free plan's limits still apply (1 folder and 2 chapters); Pro removes them for $3.99 a month.

Does it use my Active Recalling AI generations?

No. Your assistant writes the flashcards, questions and mind maps with its own model, so MCP use doesn't count against your weekly AI limit.

Can an assistant delete my flashcards?

No. The tools can read, add and review material. Saving a mind map replaces that chapter's previous mind map, but nothing else is overwritten or deleted.

Are there any limits?

Each chapter holds up to 100 flashcards and 100 questions, a single call can add up to 50 items, and each connection can make 60 requests a minute.

How do I disconnect an assistant?

Open Settings → AI assistants (MCP) in Active Recalling and select Disconnect next to the app. It loses access immediately.
